eBay Sellers beware

eBay Sellers beware! I decided to start this post to publicly document an eBay case that I received this morning. I sell quite a few items on eBay, mainly baby/child related goods recently, and pride myself on the service I provide and the 100% feedback score I maintain.

I was pretty surprised then to receive an email from eBay this morning, stating a case from a buyer who said that they hadn’t received the item. It also stated that:

Details provided by the buyer:
The buyer has not received the item - I have the proof of postage
The buyer has tried contacting you - not received a single email or other contact from them
The buyer paid on 13 Dec, 2011 – True
The buyer contacted you through email. No, they didn’t
The buyer paid for the item with PayPal. Yes they did
The buyer did not give permission to share a phone number with you. Wonder why!

I always keep proof of postage and know for a fact it was packaged up and sent, and I did it very soon after payment as it was a seasonal item so I knew the buyer would want it quickly for a party.

Caveat Emptor

I have updated the case on eBay accordingly, and asked for a copy/copies of any emails supposedly sent. (and yes, I did check my spam/trash folders etc.) I have also stated that I have proof of postage.

A few clues point to a fraudulent chancer in my opinion… they wait over 3 weeks, until Xmas has long passed before making their ‘case’. They don’t actually send any email, and they refuse to share their phone number. One reasonable explanation is that they have a different address in pay-pal to the address it was expected at – if true then still not my problem, but would be a fair explanation. But still no email to enquire about the items where-abouts!

The buyer in this case prefers a refund, but as I posted the item it is just their word against mine. If it was genuinely lost by Royal Mail, is my (non recorded/special) proof of postage worth anything? We will see… I am now awaiting a response from the buyer through eBay case resolution, and will update this post when I receive one!
